Woollahra Council and community united on position to stand-alone and oppose forced amalgamation

In its final submission to the State Government, Woollahra Council with majority support from the community, has stood firm on its ‘No Amalgamation’ position and has rejected the opportunity to nominate a preferred merger partner/s.

While the State Government is promoting amalgamation as a cost saver for local communities, nothing could be further from the truth for Woollahra, with ratepayers expected to face unavoidable rate increases of up to $340m over 20 years if an amalgamation proceeds, with only $40m in savings estimated for the same period.

Strong community opposition to amalgamation is evident with a ‘No Amalgamation’ petition collecting more than 10,600 resident signatures. The petition follows two independent community surveys, both of which showed 80% of residents oppose amalgamation, placing local identity and local representation as their top priorities.
