Public Safety CCTV in Double Bay Commercial Centre

Woollahra Council, in conjunction with Rose Bay Police, has implemented a CCTV network in the Double Bay Commercial Centre to help keep Double Bay a safe place to live, work and visit. The Public Safety CCTV network assists police with the detection and prosecution of offenders and act as a deterrent to potential offenders.

There are 21 cameras in total, spread out across the commercial centre to provide maximum coverage of public areas and streetscapes. A number of businesses are supporting the program with the installation of cameras and supporting equipment on their buildings. A map of the locations is included in the CCTV Code Of Practice(PDF, 404KB).

Signage is installed to notify the public of the cameras in operation in the area.

Council has developed a CCTV Code of Practice(PDF, 404KB) to outline governance arrangements and ensure compliance with relevant privacy legislation, and controls have been put in place to balance crime prevention needs with the right to individual privacy.

While the CCTV program is owned and operated by Council, it has been implemented through a close working partnership with the Rose Bay Police Local Area Command. Authorised Council staff and members of the Police are able to access the CCTV footage for the purpose of investigating or prosecuting a crime. Recorded footage will be deleted after 30 days unless required as evidence.
