Thomas Sutcliffe Mort

23 December 1816 – 9 May 1878

Thomas Sutcliffe Mort’s vision and energy drove the foundation of numerous successful enterprises in the colony of New South Wales. As a businessman and public figure, Mort inspired the sincere esteem of his peers. Locally he is remembered as the generous benefactor of St Mark's Darling Point, and for his own landmark house Greenoaks.

Image: Within a week of Mort's death in May 1878, a meeting of working men in Sydney resolved to show their esteem and respect for Mort by raising funds to commission and erect a public statue to his memory. Sculptured by Pierce Connolly, this statue was unveiled on 9 June 1883 in Macquarie Place, Sydney. The photograph was taken in 2009 and is from the City of Sydney Archives.
