A large proportion of our local population is aged 65 years and over. There are many community activities tailored to help you keep enjoying a healthy, active and involved lifestyle, right into retirement and beyond as well as services and programs that support the ageing journey.

  • University of the Third Age
    Sydney University of the Third Age (Sydney U3A) offers hundreds of intellectually stimulating courses throughout Sydney.
  • Volunteering opportunities
    Volunteering is a great way to make new friends, use your skills, connect with your local community and make a real difference.
  • Intergenerational program at Woollahra Pre-School
    This 20-week program brings older adults and preschoolers together for a range of fun activities.
  • Probus
    Connect socially, explore new interests, learn new skills and enjoy a variety of outings following retirement. There is lots to choose from and local monthly meetings include guest speakers.
  • Woollahra Probus - meets monthly at Gaden Centre, corner Queen St and Edgecliff Rd. Fun and Fellowship for Active retirees. Enjoy monthly meetings, guest speakers, music group, book club, walking group, day trips, multi-day trips and more. Attend three meetings as a guest for free then join at an affordable cost.   •  Dover Heights Probus - Welcome new members! Discover fun, friendship and much more in retirement. Be a part of a social club, meet new friends, hear from guest speakers and enjoy activities and outings. Meetings are held at Vaucluse Bowling Club.   • Men's Chat Group
    A forum for men to get together and discuss a topic every month, in a friendly and relaxed manner. The group meets to discuss a topic every month, and is one of the activities on offer from the Woollahra Life! Program.   • Woollahra Connect! Program
    Information and guidance on aged care options, support to register with My Aged Care and connection to other local services and programs.
  • Technology Workshops
    Woollahra Council offers a wide range of technology workshops for seniors.
  • Home support providers near you
    Services for older people and their carers to live independently in their own home or the community, under the Commonwealth Home Support Program.
  • Holdsworth Community Centre & Services
    Offer a broad range of useful support services and activities.
  • Holdsworth meal delivery and home shopping service.
    Nutritious quality meals delivered, to enable people to live independently.
  • Next of Kin Register
    A NSW Police program where older people who live alone can register personal information so that in an emergency, police can contact their next of kin if needed, as well as having access to their nominated doctor, dentist, and any medical alerts.
  • The Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS) is available to older Australians who may not have regular contact with friends or relatives, or are feeling isolated from their culture or heritage, can be referred by an aged care service provider to a volunteer visiting network member in the local area. Visits from a volunteer are available to anyone receiving government-funded residential aged care or a Home Care Package. This includes people who are approved and waiting for an aged care home or on the National Priority System for a Home Care Package.
  • Benevolent Society - Home and Community Care in Eastern Sydney
    A range of support services, including in-home support, support for carers and respite.
  • JNC Community Directories
    Directories which feature details for community services and organisations, including Aged Care, Legal Services and Emergency contacts.

Advocacy & Legal Resources

  • Let's Talk: Elder Support and Mediation Services
    The program provided by Relationships Australia provides mediation to help older people and their families address age-related issues and disagreements, as well as support to make decisions that protect the rights and safety of everyone involved. 
  • Seniors Rights Service provides free legal advice, advocacy, information and referrals. The service is a fully accredited community legal centre. Aged Care Advocacy can provide support for recipients of all Commonwealth funded aged care services.
  • Stop abuse and neglect of older people
    This resource will help you to identify different forms of abuse and gives you the steps you can take to respond. Helpful contacts and referral information is included.
  • Seniors Information Service
    A NSW Government service providing information on a range of topics including health, financial and legal matters.
  • NSW Seniors Card
    A NSW Government program providing seniors with access to a range of discounts and concessions in businesses across NSW. The Seniors Card Discount Directory is a guide to the best Seniors Card offers. 

Council's Commitment - Planning for the future

Council has been supporting the direct service provision of ageing and disability services for many years, with the provision of community facilities, direct services and the allocation of grants and subsidies.

The Delivery Program and Operational Plan describes how Council will work with the community to achieve its goals. The Disability Inclusion Action Plan (PDF version and Easy Read Version) and Social and Cultural Plan identifies short and long term priorities for the Woollahra community including seniors and people with a disability.
