Responsible fishing

As responsible fishers, we all share the responsibility of keeping our waterways, parks, and favourite fishing spots clean and healthy. It’s good for the environment, our community, and the fish you love to catch!

Remember - fishing litter can harm wildlife, pets, and people, so let’s do our part to keep it out of nature.

Stay safe and look out for others while you fish. Be considerate of swimmers, beachgoers, and dog walkers, and try to give busy areas a bit of space. Treat every fishing spot the way you’d like others to treat it - clean, safe, and ready for everyone to enjoy.

Fish respectfully and safely

  • Help to reduce fishing litter, lost gear and pollution.
  • Leave your fishing spot cleaner than you found it. Collect and dispose of unused bait, bait packaging, fish waste and litter properly, even if it isn’t yours.
  • Reduce wildlife injuries by attending your lines, using methods to avoid interactions and avoid bird feeding areas.
  • Be aware of people walking dogs and be conscious that dogs may be drawn to the smell of bait, fish or waste. Minimise the chance of having your bait taken or a dog getting caught on a baited hook.

Tips to protect your pet

  • Keep your dog close when walking near known fishing areas.
  • Use a leash in high-risk areas to prevent them from sniffing out potential dangers.
  • If you suspect your dog has been injured by a hook, seek veterinary advice.

A little care goes a long way in creating a cleaner, safer environment for people, pets and wildlife.
