We’re making our local area safer for pedestrians
Published on 20 May 2025
We’re working to make our local area safer for pedestrians by implementing new 40km/h zones in two of our most popular shopping precincts, Rose Bay Centre and Queen Street, Woollahra. Lowering the speed limit to 40km/h dramatically reduces the risk of injury or death if a vehicle collides with a pedestrian.
These high pedestrian activity areas were identified for upgrade in our Active Transport Plan in 2023. One of the aims of the 10-year plan is to deliver attractive, vibrant and safe walking locations for pedestrians, especially in our centres.
Works include installation of new speed limit signs, speed limit pavement marking and asphalt threshold street prints. The speed limit in these areas is currently 50km/h.
The upgrades at Rose Bay Centre will commence on Monday 26 May and are expected to be completed within six weeks, weather permitting.
The upgrades at Queen Street, Woollahra and surrounding streets will commence on Monday 2 June and are also expected to be completed within six weeks, weather permitting.
