Protecting our water quality

We’re improving water quality in Sydney Harbour and reducing the amount of litter ending up on Rose Bay Beach with the installation of a new Gross Pollutant Trap - a large device that sits inside an existing stormwater pipeline and filters out debris.

You can't see them because they're hidden underground, but we've already installed more than 30 of these traps across the Woollahra LGA. They're checked and cleaned at six-monthly intervals, and last year they removed about 500 tonnes of litter and plant matter before it polluted the harbour.

We’ll be installing two more traps in Point Piper and Watsons Bay in the coming months.

Find out more about our water quality improvement projects at Environment.
