Our plans to redevelop the Cross Street Car Park have progressed to the next stage. Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on our proposal to redevelop the Cross Street Car Park, either by making an online submission, emailing us or attending our community information session.

All submissions were included in a report that was considered by Council at the 28 April Council meeting. At that meeting Council resolved to proceed to the next stage of the redevelopment, which is to seek tenders for the sale of a southern portion of the site (approx. 38%). This process is expected to commence in July.

The sale proceeds will be used to build a new car park for the Double Bay community on the remainder of the site. Future reports will be brought to Council as this project progresses.

Overview

We understand Cross Street Car Park in Double Bay is important for local businesses, visitors and residents. It provides valuable parking for 396 cars, and is located conveniently within the Double Bay centre, close to shops, cafes and restaurants. 

We’ve developed a proposal to build a new 5-storey car park on the site with at least 412 spaces.

We propose to sell a portion of the site (approx. 38%) to ensure that the car park is redeveloped at no cost to ratepayers. The remainder of the site would be used to build a new 5-storey car park on the site with at least 412 spaces.

Construction of this new car park will take approximately two years (from 2028 to 2030) and is estimated to cost approximately $53.5 million. We believe the proposal to rebuild the car park is the best opportunity to deliver a much-needed new car park for Double Bay and the local community.

Remediation/repairs to the existing car park would not be a prudent use of public funds. These works would have cost a minimum of $26 million to extend the life of the car park by 10 years, and more than $39 million to extend the life of the car park for 25 years.
