Celebrating 20 years of Bushcare
Published on 06 May 2026
This year we are celebrating 20 years of Bushcare, our community-based program where volunteers work alongside Council staff to help regenerate and preserve Woollahra's bushland.
"With the help of our community we have planted thousands of seedlings and removed hundreds of thousands of tonnes of weeds," Bushcare Liaison Officer Rudi Adlmayer said.
"With so many parks and reserves in our local area, it’s work that’s ongoing and endless, but incredibly rewarding. It’s a bit like gardening, as soon as you finish one end, you’re back to the beginning!" Rudi said.
Over the last 20 years we have enjoyed the company of volunteers who have joined us every week for many years, and others who just pop in whenever they can.
"It’s a great mix of people and some of us have formed lifelong friendships," Rudi said.

Give it a Go!
Long-serving Bushcare volunteer Rob Hitchen said anyone thinking about signing up to Bushcare should give it a go.
"Try it. I'm pretty sure you'll find it very relaxing and interesting, you'll learn a lot from people. It's satisfying knowing that in a small way you are helping to improve the local natural environment and the lives of others".
Our Bushcare groups meet throughout the week at Cooper Park, Gap Park, Lighthouse Reserve, Parsley Bay, Christison Park and Trumper Park. Opportunities for corporate groups are also available.

Get involved as a volunteer
There are many local volunteering opportunities available if you’d like to get involved. In addition to Bushcare and HarbourCare, volunteers are an essential part of our libraries and Woollahra Gallery at Redleaf.
You can volunteer as little or much of your time as you’d like. Volunteering is for everyone including students, retirees, mums and dads, or anyone who has a bit of spare time to offer.
