Fashion Your Home
Published 21 October 2019
Paddington has long been the go-to place to shop for designer fashion and style. But did you know that it’s now the hottest place to shop for furniture and homewares?
Oxford Street, William Street and many of the little Paddington laneways are brimming with stores and services ready to help you create the home of your dreams.
Designer furniture, one-of-a-kind homewares, architectural and interior design services are all at your fingertips, and whether you’re into Australian made or custom made, eco-friendly or pet-friendly – you’ll find it in Paddo.
October is NSW Small Business Month and to celebrate our local retailers we’re showcasing 12 of the best homewares stores in the famous Paddington shopping precinct.
Dunlin offers a modern approach to furnishing a home, providing a curated assembly of bespoke lighting, furniture and homeware pieces. Whilst most of their collection is available online, husband and wife team Nicholas Barber and Taylor McGuire enjoy showcasing their signature pieces at their Oxford Street showroom.
“We want our furniture to reflect the lifestyle and good times of our customers” (Paul Dennis, MCM House)
The team at MCM House believe in the power of the designed environment to enhance a personal experience of living. Influenced by classic contemporary design and tasteful simplicity, MCM House offers an unmatched combination of furniture, lighting, textiles, rugs, decor and curated art from all over the world. Their Paddington showroom stretches across 3 large spaces with a number of beautifully styled bedroom suites and living areas to explore. This hands-on experience, combined with their personal styling service, gives shoppers confidence to create a home or space they truly love.
“We take inspiration from the relaxed, Australian way of life; expressing contemporary ideas through quality materials. Striving to reduce our environmental footprint and make our products sustainable throughout the entire lifecycle by using quality local materials, reducing waste, and making furniture that truly lasts”.
At Jardan, good design and sustainability is at the heart of everything they do. Born in Melbourne in 1987, they opened their Paddington showroom in 2017 and have been popular with Sydney customers looking for high quality, Australian designed and made furniture that is also eco-friendly.
Their Paddington showroom is glowing with natural colours, textures and sunlight and the team are also available for styling and design consultation.
Lava is a global architectural think tank tucked away in a tiny terrace shop-house on Oxford Street. Whilst receiving international praise for home design, LAVA designs everything from master-plans and urban centres, to furniture and hotels, and airports of the future. Their designs merge future technologies with the patterns of organisation found in nature to build a smarter, friendlier, more socially and environmentally responsible future.
Director Chris Bosse travels frequently across the world but calls Paddington his home. He has also redesigned many shop fronts on the Oxford Street strip. "We use Paddington as a role model in our projects around the world to create liveability and sustainability while celebrating urbanity and diversity. Paddington showcases an enviable lifestyle within walking distance to most of Sydney’s attractions. It’s a real alternative to living in either a super high density residential tower or a freestanding house in the leafy suburbs” (Chris Bosse, Lava Director).
“We believe that people are shifting towards a more conscious selection of products for their home, as we see a movement away from mass consumerism from those wanting to create a space with modern furniture that honours its origin” (Nic Hartley, Totem Road).
Totem Road is dedicated to producing modern, simple and beautifully crafted functional pieces without any hidden costs to the environment. Each piece of furniture is made consciously and sustainably, using only responsibly sourced materials without compromising on quality or craft. Walk through their showroom and you’ll find beautifully styled bedroom suites, luxury bed linens, home décor, crystals and greenery.

LILLY & LOLLY
Lilly & Lolly’s story began 21 years ago at the Paddington Markets. “Our brand was an instant hit with parents who wanted modern attire for their kids’ bedrooms. Paddington is such a wonderful centre for customers looking for good design and quality pieces. To duck in and out of small boutiques, discover new laneways…it just feels like a sophisticated market place” (Megan Butler, Owner).
Lilly & Lolly have been creating inspiring bedrooms and spaces for kids for over two decades. Their furniture is thoughtfully designed and professionally handcrafted in Australia. Timeless and durable yet, popular with the little ones. “Every kid wants our bunk bed! It’s so much fun and looks like a cubby house”.
Drop in and wander through their bedroom displays. Megan will help you design a space that the kids will love.
Great Dane is Australia’s eminent curator of Scandinavian furniture and lighting. Walk into their Paddington showroom and you’ll be taken on a voyage through the Scandinavian forest. From timeless timber furniture that represents the woodlands, to feature lighting that gives a nod to the northern lights, and rich carpets and leather armchairs that signify natural luxury.
Originally from Melbourne, Great Dane opened in Paddington in 2018. They were drawn to Oxford Street’s genuine sense of community and luxury. “Paddington offers a high street shopping experience that can’t be replicated in a shopping centre. There is a sense of discovery walking along Oxford Street and having shops revealed to you one at a time” (Jackson Hides, Great Dane).
Bloodworth Bellamy boasts an eclectic mix of unusual and desirable vintage and antique objects. Store owner and curator Nick Cadey has been collecting items for years but the stock is constantly evolving so you never know what you will find from one week to the next. It’s a great opportunity to own an original piece oozing with history and character. "At the moment we are seeing a strong trend towards 1980s toys, tribal antiques and ‘one-off’ objects that give homes that personalised touch” (Nick Cadey, Owner).
Stop in and say hi to Nick, he’ll tell you some fascinating stories about pieces that will bring life and character to your home.
“When chosen thoughtfully, the right wall art can provide an instant colour palette to your home décor, it creates a focal point, it brings a sense of texture and it makes a room appear finished. You could say the artwork becomes a statement piece” (Eva Martin, blinq.art).
The team at blinq.art have been selling fine art photography in its Sydney gallery for the better part of the last decade. At the moment they’re working with over 80 artists and have an extensive catalogue of themes and over 1,000 artworks.
