Preparing for emergencies

Published 16 October 2020
The more connected a community is, the more resilient it is. When big weather events strike, knowing your neighbours and being connected with your community can make a huge difference.
Now is a great time to get prepared by downloading the Australian Red Cross Get Prepared smartphone app for your IOS or Android
The app walks you through everything you might need to consider to help you prepare, survive and thrive when the unexpected occurs including:
- Creating your emergency plan
- What to pack if you need to evacuate
- Setting up a support network and working out meeting places
- Local emergency service contacts and where to go for emergency updates.
In life-threatening or emergency situations you should call 000 (free call) to contact Police, Fire or Ambulance services. Stay calm, speak slowly and clearly and provide address or location details.
To contact the Police in any other situation other than an emergency call 131 444.
If you need flood or storm emergency support call the SES on 132 500.
For more information on what you can do to prepare for an emergency visit the Red Cross website or the ABC Emergency website
A new ABC program 'Big Weather (and how to survive it)' starting from 13 October will focus on extreme weather in Australia. You can watch this program on iview.
