Corporal Henry Gaden Morton, M.M., of 'Richmond', Lower Forth Street, Woollahra

My great uncle, Henry Gaden Morton, lived with his family, including my grandmother, Marion Fairles Morton and my great grandmother, Maria Emma Morton, at 'Richmond', Lower Forth Street, Woollahra when he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force for services abroad on 3rd May 1916.

Henry was awarded the British Military Medal for bravery in the field when he faced the German forces at the Hindenburg Line at Ypres in 1917. Henry was badly wounded but returned to the line to continue firing at the enemy. Henry's father, Arthur Richmond Morton, was sadly not alive to see his son awarded this achievement but his uncle Mark Fairles Morton, M.L.A, a distinguished member of the NSW Parliament, attended the reception to welcome his nephew on return from service (as reported in The Sydney Morning Herald, 5 August 1919).
