Second Hand Sunday

Second Hand Sunday is a community event that encourages residents to hold garage sales prior to a scheduled Monday Quarterly Clean-Up Collection.

It is an excellent opportunity to meet the neighbours and very importantly reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. Why dispose of perfectly re-usable items in the clean-up when you can join in the fun on the day and make a little money while your at it.

To date, Second Hand Sunday has been trialled in the Paddington area with the support and assistance of the Paddington Society.

The next Second Hand Sunday event will be held in Clean up zone 2 on Sunday 20 July 2008. Registration brochures will be delivered to residents in the coming weeks. Alternatively, you can register by contacting Pamela Mina, Waste Projects Coordinator on 9391 7966 or email pamela.mina@woollahra.nsw.gov.au

Council's last Second Hand Sunday was held on Sunday 30 March 2008 with a record 50 households registering their participation.

The feedback from residents has been very positive:

"Very Successful - nearly everything sold"

"I think Second Hand Sunday is an excellent Council initiative"

"It is an excellent way of recycling, bringing the problem of landfill to the attention of the community, creates co-operation between Council and residents (and among neighbours) and is good fun"

"The neighbours congregated in the lane and we all had coffee in the sun while waiting for buyers"

"We had great fun. 3 houses involved and we each made over $250"

"Clearing out unwanted things that have been piling up in my house since 1973"

"Declutter, sell unwanted good quality / good condition items and save on landfill"
