Our parks and public open space and harbour foreshore areas are one of the greatest assets of our local area.
Our Management Plan activities reflect our commitment to providing safe, attractive parks, foreshores, recreational facilities and open space for the community to enjoy.
Over the next few years we intend to upgrade park furniture, playgrounds, pedestrian pathways, cycle routes and sporting venues to allow more people, to be more active, more often!
We have developed in consultation with the community, including sporting groups and other park users:
- Guidelines for the storage of boats in our foreshore parks and provided storage facilities at four venues
- New and improved playgrounds with shade
- Developed a landscape master plans to guide improvements at Gap Park, Lyne Park, Rushcutters Bay Park and Robertson Park
- Continue to maintain and improve more then 60 local parks and reserves, 9 sportsgrounds and 21 playgrounds and remnant bushland
- Recreational facility improvements, including the upgrade of Watson Bay Baths, will also be carried out
Council takes a lead role in the planning and provision of recreation services and facilities for the municipality. The development of the Woollahra Recreation Needs Assessment and Strategy provides Council with an up-to-date understanding of the community’s recreation needs, existing opportunities and relevant trends impacting on recreation services or facility provision. Some recommendations / actions from this strategy include:
- Council to recognise, actively promote and build on the high level of community satisfaction with Woollahra’s open spaces, through on-going park improvements and infrastructure developments
- Consider opportunities to provide additional facilities to support informal recreational use of parks
- Investigate opportunities to improve public safety in parks through improved path surfaces, lighting and opportunities for casual surveillance of open space areas
- Investigate opportunities for the installation of youth friendly infrastructure
- Review and implement the Woollahra Bike Plan as this will provide opportunities for shared walking/cycle trails
- Upgrade the sports training lights at Christison Park and Woollahra Ovals 2&3 to cater for the high demand for sports lighting to accommodate night training and manage sporting club use. Ensure lighting design minimises light spillage to surrounding areas in accordance with Australian Standard 4282/1997 “Control of the obtrusive effects of outdoor lighting.”
- Work with clubs to educate them regarding field carrying capacity, impacts of training patterns and encourage greater responsibility in the club use of facilities.
