Vaucluse Council Minutes of 7.01.1931 (page 405) show that Alderman Combes moved and Alderman Flood seconded a motion that three acres of land on the New South Head Road (formerly known as the Shaftsbury Grounds) be dedicated by the Government to Vaucluse Council for public recreation purposes and be named "Samuel Park" as a token of appreciation to the Mayor, Alderman Alfred Charles Samuel for his untiring efforts in the welfare of the Municipality.
