Community gardens are a unique form of open space whereby people can learn, recreate, socialise and demonstrate sustainable principles within a garden setting.
Community gardening is a valuable community recreational activity that contributes to health and well-being, positive social interaction, community development, environmental education, sustainable principles, protection and use of public open space.
On Tuesday 29 January 2008, Council resolved to adopt the Community Garden Policy and the establishment of a Community Garden at Trumper Park. Council also agreed that the Community Garden will be managed by an Association for an initial one year period. Following this, Council will consider options to maintain continued use of the Gardens.
An Association has been set up and plans are currently being prepared for the creation of garden beds.
The Trumper Park site is located at the rear of the Palms Tennis Courts, adjacent to the Council Nursery, and access is from Quarry Street. The site once established, will be fenced and include individual allotments, a shelter, water tanks and seating. View an aerial view of the Paddington community garden.
It is envisaged that the garden will act as a demonstration site for the community to utilise small sustainability measures in their own homes and gardens like water tanks. The site will also be used by Council’s Waste department to conduct community workshops on composting, worm farming and no dig gardening.
