Woollahra Mayor Susan Wynne will swim 30 laps of Redleaf Pool on 23 November as part of the White Ribbon campaign to stop violence against women. Find out how you can show your support.
The Mayor will join Andrew O’Keefe, Channel 7 personality and the Chairman of the White Ribbon Foundation, and local swimmer Gary Meyers in the pool to encourage the community to take action to prevent violence against women.
“Every lap I complete will send a clear message to the community that violence against women is unacceptable and we must take public action to challenge attitudes and behaviours,” she said.
“If we are to change the way our society responds to this issue, and prevent violence against women from occurring, we must speak out. We must take public action. We must not remain silent.
“I am proud that I can do my bit to help the White Ribbon Campaign because violence should never be tolerated.”
In Australia, statistics show that one in three women will be assaulted or abused in her lifetime. These women are our mothers, our girlfriends, our wives, our daughters, our colleagues and our friends.
The White Ribbon Campaign is the only national violence prevention campaign designed to change the way society responds to violence in many women's lives.
The White Ribbon Campaign culminates on White Ribbon Day (25 November) each year, when men and women across Australia are called upon to wear a white ribbon or wristband as a visual symbol of their commitment and oath.
Woollahra Council will also be hosting a free White Tie event in conjunction with the Holdsworth Community Centre, Bondi Beach Cottage and Community of Schools in the Eastern Suburbs to raise money for the White Ribbon Foundation.
The White Tie Event will be held at Woollahra Council Chambers on 24 November from 4.30-6.30pm
The Mayor will open the event and White Ribbon Ambassador Phil Lambert will give a short speech while drinks and canapés are served on the terrace.
Residents are encouraged to wear a white tie or something white to show their support. To RSVP phone 9391 7166 or email community@woollahra.nsw.gov.au
