Woollahra Council is inviting local artists to help transform four traffic signal boxes into colourful artworks that reflect the culture, history and heritage of the local area.
The Council is looking for concepts, themes and designs for traffic signal boxes at Rose Bay, Paddington and Rushcutters Bay.
Mayor Susan Wynne said it was a unique opportunity for local artists to connect with the community in a public domain.
“This is a fantastic initiative that is aimed at helping us build a vibrant and dynamic community,” she said.
“We want visual designs that reflect a positive tone and draw on elements from local landmarks, the natural environment, community, culture, road safety or everyday life.
“The traffic signal boxes are the perfect canvas to promote our local area and to engage with motorists and pedestrians.
“This project is also aimed at preventing and deterring vandalism on the traffic signal boxes which has been an ongoing problem over the past few years.”

Submissions will close on 6 February 2012 with the successful artists to be contacted in mid-February. Painting is scheduled for March 2012.
Artists will be paid $750 per box.
Selected artists will be required to attend an induction-training workshop prior to carrying out the work.
