Have your say on Kiaora Lands - amended plans

Published: 7 December 2011

Amended plans have been submitted on the proposed $110 million Kiaora Lands redevelopment at Double Bay. Woollahra Council invite you to have your say on these. Submissions close 2 May, and the DA is available for viewing on the Kiaora Lands website.

The joint venture between Woollahra Council and Woolworths is set to revitalise Double Bay with plans to redevelop the existing Woolworths site on New South Head Road, Council’s Kiaora Lane and Anderson Street car parks, and a number of properties in Kiaora Road and Patterson Street.

The applicant has submitted amended plans which make changes to the roof top carpark. The changes include:

  • replacing originally proposed shade structures with a weather protective awning
  • redesigning the landings to the travelators
  • reconfiguration of carparking spaces
  • a change in the number of carparking spaces from 459 to 446

We have written to those people who put in submissions on the original proposal and to the owners of properties in the locality.

Submissions on the amended plans may be made by Wednesday 2 May 2012.

For details on the development and how to make a submission on the ammended plans visit the Kiaora Lands Proposed Redevelopment website.

A LEP DCP was specifically prepared for the development site after extensive consultation with the community during 2010. The plans on display are consistent with the planning instruments.

Woollahra Mayor Susan Wynne said feedback plays a vital role in the decision making process.

“Normally, a community consultation period runs for 15 days but given the strong community interest in Kiaora Lands we have increased this timeframe to 70 days,” she said.

“We believe this development will have huge benefits for the community, creating an extra $100 million for the local economy and 300 new jobs. It will give Council ownership of a significant, long term revenue generating asset that will allow us to invest more money on local infrastructure and services.”

“This is why it is important that everyone in our community has an opportunity share their views.”

Every submission will be considered carefully in the report on Kiaora Lands and by the Sydney East Joint Regional Planning Panel before it makes its final decision on the DA in 2012. If approved, construction is expected to start in mid-2012 and will take up to two and half years to complete.

The project is proposed to be carried out in two stages. The first stage, on the existing car park and connecting lands, will involve the construction of a new Woolworths supermarket, Dan Murphy’s and Thomas Dux outlets, as well as speciality retail stores, commercial office space and a car park with approximately 500 car spaces.

The second stage includes a new three storey, 2,300 square metre Double Bay library, commercial and retail tenancies and a public arcade between Kiaora Lane and New South Head Road.

Woolworths Limited will be responsible for the development of the site. Upon completion the entire development site will be turned over to Council ownership.

The DA is available for viewing on the Kiaora Lands website and at our Customer Service Centre at 536 New South Head Road, Double Bay, from Monday to Friday 8am-4.30pm.
