Fridge Buyback Program

Published: 30 Jul 2008

Recycle your old working second fridge and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The Fridge Buyback Program will start from Friday 1 August 2008 for residents to hand in their old, inefficient working second fridges that are expensive to run.

The program has received funding from the NSW Government’s Climate Change Fund to collect, degas and recycle 19,000 fridges over the next three years, saving over 150,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions and millions of dollars in avoided electricity bills.

Residents will receive free in-home collection by experienced removalists if 20 stairs or less are involved in removal, and an incentive rebate of $35 if the removal involves 6 stairs or less. Where there are more steps. people are encouraged, if possible, to bring the fridge down to a lower level to meet the eligibility criteria. If this is not possible, collection can be arranged for a fee. For safety reasons, fridges should never be left outside without the door being removed.

Residents handing in their fridges will save on average, over $190 a year on their energy bills and cut their greenhouse emissions by a total of eight tonnes.

To be eligible for the program, fridges must be the second working fridge in the house, 250 litres and more in size and 10 or more years old.
