Australia’s overall population is ageing and, in 2001, the Woollahra Local Government Area already had 25% of its population aged 55 years and over. The result of increased life expectancy, falling fertility rates and the effect of the “baby boomer” generation moving through to older age groups has contributed to an increase in the number and proportion of people aged over 55. Population ageing has a range of impacts, which present challenges as well as opportunities for Council.
The Social and Cultural Plan 2008-2013 (PDF file, 320kb) identifies short and long term priorities for the Woollahra Local Government Area (LGA) in relation to older people, aged 55 years and over, and people with a disability. Detailed demographic analysis, literature reviews and extensive community consultations were completed in order to identify priority community needs and Woollahra Municipal Council’s role in addressing these needs.
Council has been supporting the direct service provision of ageing and disability services for many years, with the provision of community facilities, direct services and the allocation of grants and subsidies. Since the 1960s, Council has provided services for older people, community transport, and programs for people with a disability through the Holdsworth Community Centre and Services and the Woollahra Seniors and Community Centre. Council also supports St Vincents Community Health Day Care, Miroma Light Industries and Woollahra Voluntary Community Service (Meals on Wheels).
Council provides an Aged and Disability Service and works closely with the Woollahra Seniors Advisory Committee to coordinate activities and events for our seniors.
