Biodiversity

Biological diversity or biodiversity is defined as the variety of all life forms (plants, animals and micro-organisms), the genes they contain and the ecosystems to which they form a part of (National Parks and Wildlife Service 1999). Healthy, functioning ecosystems are necessary to maintain the quality of the atmosphere, climate, fresh water, soil formation, cycling of nutrients and the disposal of wastes. The conservation of biodiversity is a cornerstone of ecologically sustainable development (Environment Protection Authority 1997).
