What does it mean to be an Australian?
Between November 2011 and February 2012, the search was on for eight books ‘that together paint a picture of the Australian people and the land that we live in’.
This was ‘your chance to vote for the book that will go forward to represent your state or territory and will become part of the National Year of Reading collection.’
‘Our Story’ presented shortlists of books (fiction and non-fiction), for all Australian states and territories: The books were decided on by an independent panel of readers, choosing from a selection forwarded by publishers and libraries.
The following books were the ‘Our Story’ shortlisted books for New South Wales:

The eight winning books for Australia wide were announced at the launch of the National Year of Reading on 14 February 2012, at the National Library of Australia in Canberra.
And the winner for New South Wales was: John Hughes’ The Idea of Home
