Work experience

Working for a local council offers a much greater diversity of careers than it ever has before. There are more than 60 different professions to choose from, ranging from town planners, engineers, horticulturalists, mechanics, child care teachers, financial accountants and customer service officers.

So if you're exploring your career options, work experience at Woollahra Council is a great place to discover a variety of successful career possibilities!

Woollahra Council supports work experience programs and is committed to helping provide opportunities for students to be involved in the work environment.

The purpose of work experience programs is to allow participants to become familiar with positions/careers, employer expectations and working conditions. Participants also have the opportunity to realistically assess their own suitability for particular jobs and work environments.

Our work experience program also enables the local community to forge links with their Council.

Types of work experience offered

Council offers work experience in various departments at Council, usually for a period of 1 week.

Providing work experience within one specific department is subject to the operational and staffing situation within that Department at the time the student seeks work experience.

Students can participate in a Business Administration work experience program where they will be involved in various administration duties such as correspondance, database maintenance, filing and organising, PA duties and general administration tasks with various departments in Council.

Students can also participate in a general Local Government Overview work experience program, with a variety of different departments. This program will expose the student to technical and professional roles, both with experiences within the office environment as well as involve the student in observing on-site visits and inspections.

Both the Business Administration and the Local Government Overiew programs expose students to a range of different areas including Development Assessment, Building and Compliance, Parks & Streetscape Management, Engineering, Community Services, Communications/Media and Corporate Services.

Please specify your area of interest when you apply for work experience.

What to do if you are interested

If you are a school student interested in work experience at Woollahra Council, please talk to your career adviser. Applications should be forwarded to Human Resources.

As a university or TAFE student, please contact Human Resources to discuss your work experience needs.

Please note that Council must ensure that participants are adequately insured against work place injury or illness. Your school, TAFE or university usually covers insurance. Work experience cannot commence until proof of insurance coverage has been provided. Therefore an individual who is not linked with a school/university/TAFE will not be able to apply for work experience due to insurance reasons.
