2011 Citizen of the Year: Saxon Graham
For demonstrating through his leadership that people with a disability can exceed preconceived limits in all aspects of life. Saxon has volunteered at the Holdsworth Community Centre and Meals on Wheels for over fifteen years. He has been an ambassador for People with a Disability and is the ex president and current secretary of the Up! Club – a Sydney-wide social network and activity organisation for people with Down’s Syndrome.
2011 Citizen of the Year, Highly Commended Award: Robert Schneider
For building a family home with an area specifically designed to cater for young adults with intellectual disabilities. Robert runs a day program from his home that operates every Monday for 40 weeks a year. He has a group of volunteers and between them they look after 12 people with a range of intellectual disabilities, many of whom undertake positive transformations during the program.
2011 Senior Citizen of the Year: Russell Stern
For community service, including being an active member of the Bondi Lion’s Club for many years, and volunteering for the Jewish Centre On Ageing (COA) for 14 years. He is president of COA, and his work helps ensure that Jewish seniors remain independent in their own homes.
2011 Senior Citizen of the Year, Highly Commended Award: Maureen Clarke Mastellone
For many years of service to the community. Maureen has been involved in a wide range of community groups including the Rose Bay Chamber of Commerce, the Rose Bay Residents’ Association and the Woollahra History and Heritage Society.
2011 Young Citizen of the Year: Antonia Clarke
For her pro-bono work in Ghana for the Human Rights Advocacy Centre as a lawyer, working on gender-related human rights issues and representing clients on domestic violence and divorce issues, as well as representing refugees. Antonia is also recognised for her work locally, from her pro-bono work at the Redfern Legal Centre to her history of fundraising efforts for the Red Shield Appeal.
