About the work

"The piece represents reeds and rushes, which would have been characteristic of the original wetlands environment of the Double Bay area. Sitting on the edge of the shopping precinct, much as these type of plants sit around a pond or creek bed, the sculpture is intended not only to evoke a memory of the ancient landscape but also to symbolise the rebirth of Double Bay through the current capital works project..... It has been exquisitely and carefully crafted from high quality stainless steel which gives it a jewel like quality, a quality in keeping with the beauty and style of the community,”
Artist, Bronwyn Berman.

“The dramatic work is bold and brightens a part of Double Bay that needed a lift,”
Cr Andrew Petrie, Mayor of Woollahra.

Background

Launched in February 2008, the Double Bay Eastern Gateway Project called for artists around Australia to enter a piece of artwork to landmark the revitilisation of the Double Bay Business Centre.

Artist and former Woollahra resident Bronwyn Berman was chosen by Council’s Public Art Advisory Committee to produce an artwork for this project.

Bronwyn Berman is an accomplished Australian artist and has exhibited her work in the prestigious Sculpture by the Sea exhibition. From the forty nine entries received, Bronwyn’s concept was unanimously selected for its representation of the original wetlands environment that characterised Double Bay prior to European settlement.

The project is the first significant endeavour since the adoption of Council’s Public Art Policy (PDF) in 2006 and is proudly supported by the Public Art Advisory Committee. The committee's role is to encourage public art in the community and provide opportunities for artists in Woollahra.

“The work is impressive and will certainly get people talking. Up to $100,000 had been allocated for this project and associated streetscape improvements works. Council is supportive of increasing the role of public art in local community,”
Cr Andrew Petrie, Mayor of Woollahra.

This work is part of the Double Bay Improvement works to revitalise and attract more visitors to the wonderful area of Double Bay.
