Memory Weave

Memorial for Children, Royal Hospital for Women’s Park, Paddington.

Memory Weave is inspired by those who dedicated their life to the patients of the Royal Hospital for Women – the nurses and doctors.

The design of the memorial is based on the wrapping and protecting of the new-born child through the act of swaddling. Wrapped in a woven, breathable cloth, the child is protected and embraced into the world.

The fragility and innocence of life is represented by a folding, enveloping steel framed mesh structure. The cloth of the memorial is a custom-designed mesh, its detail inspired by the identity tags given to both mother and child immediately following childbirth. The form of the identity tags is laser cut to produce a fine woven multi-coloured mesh.

Visitors to the memorial may add to the woven form by adding their own memories – flowers, messages, childhood toys. The memorial becomes a living place to remember loss and celebrate life.
