Exempt development is characterised as minor development that has minimal environmental impact on neighbourhood amenity.

Both the State Government and Council have policies that identify what development is exempt development. These are set out in the State Environmental Planning Policy (Exempt and Complying Development Codes) 2008 (State Codes) and Council’s Development Control Plan for Exempt and Complying Development 2000 (Council’s DCP) (PDF file, 525k).

Development may be either

• Exempt development under the State Codes SEPP, or
  
• Exempt development under Council’s Development Control Plan (DCP).
